Furphy Hall – Little Creatures
A heritage-sensitive transformation of an industrial site into a dynamic hospitality venue. The Furphy Hall at Little Creatures Brewery is a carefully executed adaptive reuse project, transforming a heritage-listed industrial factory shed into a multi-purpose hospitality venue.
The design respects the site’s working-class origins, integrating historical references to the Furphy brand while delivering a contemporary hospitality experience. At its core, the venue features a fully functioning bar, commercial kitchen, and flexible event space, allowing for live music, comedy nights, and large-scale functions. The project required extensive consultation with Heritage Victoria and the City of Greater Geelong’s Heritage Advisor, ensuring a sensitive yet functional redevelopment that preserved the site’s industrial character while making it suitable for modern operations.
Material choices and subtle design interventions reinforce the authenticity of the space, with whitewashed brickwork, recycled timber elements, and carefully integrated lighting maintaining the rugged charm of the original structure. The result is a brand-aligned, contextually appropriate venue that honors Geelong’s industrial history while supporting new cultural and social experiences.
Honoring Heritage: Balancing Preservation & Modern Functionality
The redevelopment of Furphy Hall was guided by a commitment to preserving the site’s industrial legacy while ensuring its functionality as a hospitality venue. The existing factory shed structure was largely retained, with its distinctive roofline, original steel trusses, and brickwork carefully restored to maintain authenticity.
While historical integrity was key, modern upgrades were necessary to support the operational needs of a contemporary hospitality venue. Structural enhancements allowed for the integration of a fully equipped bar and commercial kitchen, while thoughtful layout refinements ensured flexibility for live performances, private events, and everyday dining.

Navigating Heritage Regulations & Consultation
Given the site’s historical significance, close collaboration with Heritage Victoria and the City of Greater Geelong’s Heritage Advisor was essential in ensuring a sensitive and compliant design outcome. The process required careful documentation of existing conditions, analysis of historical materials, and strategic decision-making to balance heritage and functionality.
This consultation influenced key design choices, such as retaining and restoring the original brickwork, minimising external alterations, and incorporating sympathetic materials for new interventions. The result is a redevelopment that respects the past while allowing the venue to serve a new purpose for the future.
Adaptive Reuse Strategies for Industrial Buildings
Retaining the structural essence of the original building was central to the project’s sustainability and character. Existing steel trusses, masonry walls, and timber elements were preserved and repurposed where possible, reducing the need for extensive new materials.
New additions, including joinery, bar fit-outs, and acoustic treatments, were designed to be visually and materially cohesive with the industrial aesthetic. This adaptive reuse approach not only reinforced the authenticity of the venue but also minimised environmental impact, aligning with sustainable building practices.

Flexibility in Hospitality Design
A key objective was to create a venue that could support multiple functions, ranging from casual dining to large-scale events and live performances. The internal layout was carefully considered to allow reconfiguration, ensuring a seamless transition between different uses.
- Booth seating areas encourage intimacy and small-group gatherings, while maintaining an open feel.
- Integrated PA and lighting systems allow the venue to shift effortlessly into event mode.
- Bar and kitchen placement ensures efficient service flow, whether for everyday operations or high-capacity functions.
This flexibility ensures that Furphy Hall remains a versatile and commercially viable space, capable of adapting to the evolving needs of both the client and the community.
Materiality & Craftsmanship
A defining aspect of the Furphy Hall transformation was the careful selection and treatment of materials, ensuring the venue retained its industrial heritage while delivering a refined hospitality experience.
- Whitewashed brickwork was applied to soften the raw industrial aesthetic while maintaining the character of the original structure. The graduated sandblasting technique allowed for selective exposure of the existing brick texture, creating a sense of depth and history.
- Recycled timber beams were used extensively in joinery, booth seating, and shelving, reinforcing the connection to industrial craftsmanship while adding warmth to the space.
- Custom steelwork and exposed trusses were carefully restored, with subtle refinements that respect their original function while providing structural integrity for modern use.
- Lighting integration was subtle yet intentional, designed to highlight the natural textures of the brickwork and timber elements, creating an inviting yet atmospheric environment.
By maintaining a balance between raw industrial elements and refined hospitality details, the venue successfully preserves its historic character while offering a comfortable and visually engaging guest experience.
