Mooroolbark East Primary School
The existing school comprised of LTC 1970s timber framed skillion learning environments that were relatively inflexible, institutional in nature, and not conducive to mixed modes of educational delivery as required under current educational pedagogy. The brief incorporated a complete Masterplanning of the school, including a total reinterpretation of the learning spaces to provide flexible, adaptable, modern learning environments that maximised indoor/outdoor relationships. The scope also eventuated in the delivery of a full multi-use Gymnasium space, to serve the School and local community.
The final design outcome eventuated in the co-ordination of an entire school rebranding, with the building stock unrecognisable from the original parent buildings. The design successfully broke down the institutional feel of the school corridor to create an inviting community focused facility. All spaces had multiple flexible options in terms of flexible ‘breakouts’ and incidental learning spaces. Through an innovative approach to external learning environments and careful use of colour form and materials, the entire school has been fully reinvigorated to provide modern educational spaces for the future.
